Geoff Keighley has always been super passionate about video games and has dumped that passion and an even greater amount of money into the idea of giving games, developers, and studios the attention and space they deserve to present and float their ideas to the gaming community. Through initiatives like Day of the Dev, the Gaming Awards, and Summer Games Fest, Keighley has not only created an empire for himself but he’s also created an enduring environment in which gaming has flourished and grown to its most profitable era ever. Today was no different with Summer Games Fest ‘23, and BSO Entertainment have you covered with the biggest announcement of the day.
Ever since Spider-Man first dropped on the PlayStation 4 back in 2018, it’s been one of the biggest hits in gaming. Spider-Man: Miles Morales followed this up when the PS5 dropped in 2020, but that was more of a continuation than a fully fleshed-out game. That said if you add up all the DLC from the 2018 Spider-Man with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, you probably get about two full games worth of content in the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man 2 is supposed to be the full sequel to the original and is meant to combine Miles Morales with his Peter Parker counterpart in an adventure that sees the two of them facing off against many different foes, including Kraven the Hunter and Venom.
We got our first look at Spider-Man 2 a few weeks ago during a Sony PlayStation Showcase. I covered that event right here on BSO, but one thing was notably missing during that 12-minute reveal of actual gameplay footage and that was the game’s release date. Summer Games Fest gave us our exclusive’s release date and it’s set for October 20th, 2023. Furthermore, players can pre-order the game starting in eight days on June 16th. There will be several different versions available, including a $229 Collector’s Edition featuring a 19” inch statue of Venom fighting Parker and Morales, along with all the benefits from the Deluxe Edition.
The other major news about Spider-Man 2 was that Eddie Brock WILL NOT be Venom in this game, Sony revealed. The developers wanted to give fans a truly memorable and fresh story that would enable them to not just create something new but to provide fans with an experience grounded in the material they know but flexible enough to surprise them at every twist and turn. As for who will be under the Symbiote in Spider-Man 2, Sony was rather coy. They said you’ll have to buy and play the game to find out the new face behind the old nemesis.
I absolutely love this move by Sony with the game. As I’ve said before about the MCU, it was never the intention of Marvel or the individual creators behind these projects to do a one-for-one retelling of the comics. Why retell an old story when you can improve upon it or even add your own twist? Just like the Ultimate Universe, What If?, Marvel 2099, and others, these universes exist to provide new stories with older characters. They are their own universes and their origins will not always be the same. It’s the best way to keep things fresh in the world of comics and I’m super excited to see it play out in the new Spider-Man 2 game.
