Cory Sandhagen demonstrated improvement in his wrestling skills on Saturday, which could be crucial for winning a title.
Although it might not have been the ideal ending for the fans in “Music City,” Sandhagen secured a unanimous decision victory through his takedowns and top control, ensuring a safe win and maintaining his position in the title race.
It’s possible that it didn’t meet the expectations of his boss. According to social media reports during the headliner, UFC president Dana White departed from his cageside seat in the middle of the fight and did not return.
In their 140-pound contract weight bout, Sandhagen (17-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) utilized his wrestling skills effectively to secure a unanimous decision victory over Rob Font (20-7 MMA, 10-6 UFC) in the main event of UFC on ESPN 50 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. Due to Font’s short-notice acceptance, the fight was contested at a weight class five pounds higher than bantamweight.
Sandhagen achieved a clean sweep on the judges’ scorecards, earning a trio of 50-45 scores and claiming his third consecutive victory. Afterward, he requested a title shot against the victor of the bantamweight championship clash between Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley, scheduled for two weeks from now in Boston.
Cory Sandhagen wasted no time and secured an early takedown, but Rob Font countered with a guillotine choke attempt. Sandhagen defended well, escaping a kimura attempt to get back on his feet. Sandhagen landed a solid right hand during his next takedown attempt. Towards the end of the round, Font used a caught kick to take Sandhagen down briefly, sending a message of determination.
Sandhagen dominated the second round with multiple takedowns and top control, but Font’s defense prevented a finish. In the middle round, Font faced a similar challenge as Sandhagen controlled him on the ground for over four minutes, landing strong punches. Font managed to get back on his feet but had to evade another Sandhagen jumping knee before the round ended.
In “Music City,” the disappointed fans made their feelings known after a lackluster 15 minutes of fighting. Tyson Chartier, Font’s head coach, urged him to step up for the final rounds. However, 20 seconds into the fourth, Sandhagen secured another takedown, frustrating Font further. The fifth round saw Sandhagen attempting a D’Arce choke, but ultimately, he emerged victorious with a clean sweep on the scorecards, as Bruce Buffer announced.
Cory Sandhagen’s impressive streak continues with a third consecutive win, overcoming previous losses to T.J. Dillashaw and Petr Yan. On the other hand, Rob Font returns to the loss column after a win over Adrian Yanez, marking his third loss in the last four fights.
