In a surprising turn of events, the San Antonio Spurs suffered yet another loss against the Los Angeles Clippers, despite a standout performance from rookie Keldon Johnson. Ever since being drafted 29th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, Johnson has been compared to former Spur Kawhi Leonard, and with good reason. The Spurs were only able to draft Johnson due to a trade involving Leonard, and he has been the shining star of their draft class so far.
Clippers Prevail as Keldon Johnson’s Performance Can’t Save Spurs from Loss
However, Johnson has struggled against the Clippers, with the Spurs holding a 3-9 record against them since he joined the team. His average points per game also significantly drops when facing off against Leonard and his former team. But in their most recent game, Johnson flipped the script and led the Spurs with 22 points and 10 rebounds, outscoring Leonard by a point.

This was only the second time in his career that Johnson has had an above-average game against the Clippers, the first being last season when he scored 23 points. Despite the loss, Johnson’s performance was a breath of fresh air for the struggling Spurs, who have been plagued by disappointing losses this season.
It’s clear that Johnson is capable of stepping up and taking the lead on both ends of the court, and fans can only hope that this will eventually translate into more wins for the team.
The Clippers, despite their recent struggles, are still a formidable opponent with a well-rounded roster. So to see Johnson shine against them is a promising sign for his future in the league.
