Brett Veach, General Manager of Kansas City, Discusses His Greatest Regret of His illustrious Draft Performance

Under general manager Brett Veach, the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls in the last five seasons. The Chiefs have had a lot of success in the last several years, and part of that success can be attributed to having the right players in the proper positions. Even if they did won the Super Bowl the previous season, the team wasn’t particularly strong. And the general manager acknowledged it might have been a mistake on his end.

Mahomes was forced to lead the offense most of the regular season since the offensive line was erratic at times and merely mediocre at others.

The receiving corps made mistakes that cost the Chiefs several games. Even the most casual football fan could not have missed Kansas’s offensive shortcomings last year. But if they hadn’t passed on DK Metcalf in 2019—could it have been prevented?

Veach acknowledged that the Chiefs blew a chance by passing on Metcalf in the draft. During “Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour,” he disclosed:

“Sometimes you don’t take guys and fans do the mock drafts, and they go through them years later and are like, ‘We should’ve taken this guy or that guy,’” Veach said. “But at the time, a player could’ve been off your board because you had character concerns or an injury concern. I think, looking back on DK, there were areas that we weren’t sure on, but there were none maybe that should’ve prompted us to bypass (him). I think that’s one player that sticks out.”

Since being selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2019 draft, Metcalf has become one of the league’s top receivers. Since then, he has amassed over a thousand receiving yards and been named to two Pro Bowls. But given the Chiefs’ recent two Super Bowl victories, can we really be too upset about this one miss?
