The Kansas City Chiefs have been rocked to their core by Rashee Rice‘s ascent and collapse. Head coach Andy Reid was forced to defend the team’s player selection choice this time, despite the fact that the squad has supported the receiver through thick and thin since his offseason troubles started.
There is no doubting Rice’s performance on the football field. The Southern Methodist University (SMU) alumnus caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season as a professional, solidifying his position as one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ most dependable targets.
Shortly after the team’s victory in Super Bowl LVIII, the receiver started having issues.
Rice was involved in a car accident in Dallas, Texas on March 30 that resulted in multiple car damage and six injuries. A photojournalist accused him of assault outside a Dallas bar on March 6. The player’s involvement in a shooting incident against an SMU basketball player’s vehicle was finally made public three weeks ago.
The Chiefs have been required to respond to a wide range of inquiries regarding Rice as a result of the deluge of allegations against him. At a recent press conference, a reporter questioned Reid about the team’s knowledge of the shooting incident and the player’s off-field issues.

During the Chiefs’ latest organized team activity (OTA), Reid refrained from providing a straight response to the query in a press conference. “We knew enough to draft him and then we just went with the process,” stated the head coach in a straightforward manner.
Professional teams are well known for knowing every detail there is to know about their chosen players’ athletic backgrounds. They maintain a comprehensive record of their physical data and are well-versed in their statistics.
Perhaps this explains Reid’s statement that “we found that it was satisfactory for us” during the hiring process.
