With Mikal Bridges joining the Nova crew over the bridge, the Knicks started a serious championship run. On Tuesday night, Bridges was forced to leave Brooklyn by Leon Rose, who ultimately gave up his draft picks and went all-in with a club that now includes four players from Villanova’s championship squads.
A number of factors contributed to the trade’s surprise, chief among them the Nets’ perception throughout the league as being too hesitant to support the Knicks’ championship aspirations, given that they had lived under the shadow of their rival’s fame.
However, following their mistakes with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, Sean Marks’ construction was at its lowest point.
How would Mikal Bridges fare for Knicks?
Considering Bridges’ deficiencies in the starting role, Brooklyn’s haul for him was substantial: four unprotected first-round picks (2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031), a 2025 protected first-round pick that was rerouted from the Bucks, a 2028 unprotected pick exchange, and a 2025 second-round pick.
The Knicks held onto their draft selections from Wednesday, which were 24th and 25th overall. The Knicks had been hoarding picks for years, waiting for the proper chance to act. They had nearly completed a trade for Donovan Mitchell two years prior.

Because of Bridges’ two-way versatility, durability, and connection with the team core—as well as the fact that the 27-year-old reportedly stated he preferred the Knicks—they now feel they have finally discovered the appropriate target.
Bridges has two years left on a team-friendly contract that is worth about $48 million. Rose has been cautious during his tenure, but this deal is a statement that, following two visits to the conference semifinals, he is going all in. The Knicks traded Bojan Bogdanovic, who recently had surgery on his wrist and foot, to match salaries.
Put differently, not a single player who was expected to play a big role in the rotation was traded. With Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle as two All-Stars and a strong supporting group that helped lead Tom Thibodeau’s team to the second-best record in the East, Bridges doesn’t have to be the best player in the Knicks.
Bridges made it apparent that he also wanted to play Knicks with his college pals.
