Outrage at Caitlin Clark’s Olympic Snub: Portnoy Refers to the Choice as “Dumbest Ever”

The sports world has taken a lot of notice when Caitlin Clark was left off of the US women’s national squad for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Creator of Barstool Dave Portnoy didn’t hold back, describing the choice as “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard” and expressing shock at rumors that the rookie for the Indiana Fever would not be included in the 12-man roster. He went so far as to say that the people in charge ought to “take your brain, put it in a museum and study it for how dumb you are.”

In a furious video tirade, Portnoy attacked the choice even further and expressed his disappointment at the thought of missing Clark’s performance. He said,

“I’d rather watch grass grow, I’d rather watch paint dry,”  “I’d rather watch dirt just be moved around because Caitlin Clark is not on the team. If she’s there, it’s appointment TV.”

Colin Cowherd also voiced his opinion, equating Clark with Christian Laettner, the well-known college dropout who was selected for the 1992 Dream Team. Cowherd said he was shocked that Clark, who he considers to be “TV GOLD,” was left off of the Olympic roster. Given Clark’s fame, he brought up the possible lost chance for generating cash.

The irony of keeping a player as well-liked as Clark out of a sport that is attempting to grow in popularity was brought up by Sirius XM’s Justine Termine. Termine wrote,

Even if she stinks, which she doesn’t, that’s horrible vision,

Caitlin Clark’s absence draws harsh criticism from many

The legendary US soccer player Alexei Lalas provided a direct analysis of the choice, stating that he did not comprehend Clark’s rejection from the Olympic squad.

Sports industry figures’ reactions as a whole reveal a sense of shock and annoyance at the choice to keep Clark off the Olympic team selection.

Most people tend to agree that her omission was a squandered chance to take advantage of her fame and her ability to draw attention to and interest in women’s basketball.
