Sean Payton has never been out of news. Even for players with obvious potential, winning the starting quarterback position in the NFL is never an easy feat. Bo Nix’s situation is different from Caleb Williams‘, who was selected by the Chicago Bears as their first pick for the starting quarterback position almost immediately.
Sean Payton, who prefers to wait and watch, is still in the running for the starting quarterback position with the Denver Broncos. When selecting his starting quarterback, Sean Payton is going to be more methodical. In contrast to the Bears, Payton is stating unequivocally that Bo Nix needs to establish himself as a starter.
According to Payton, who values merit and competition, he wants to watch Nix square off against Zach Wilson and the other experienced quarterbacks in the Broncos’ locker room. He clarified in a recent interview with Kay Adams on the Up and Adams Show:
“When we saw the Bears named Caleb their starter in the spring and no veteran, they didn’t bring anybody in. And I understand that, but philosophically we were going to be different.”
Who would Sean Payton select?
Since they benched seasoned quarterback Russell Wilson in favor of Jarrett Stidham last season, the Broncos have been considering their alternatives at quarterback. Wilson is no longer available, thus Zach Wilson and Bo Nix are still fighting for the top slot. And it’s obvious why now.
With some experience under his belt, Zac Wilson played in a few decent games before being replaced by a player with a generational talent. Wilson could take a break from leading the fort as Nix gradually came into his own.
But, not obtaining a top quarterback in the draft does give them the flexibility to start a veteran and gradually bring in Nix. Payton is known for playing mind games before the season begins, so this could all be a ruse to turn teams away from Nix while they continue to build around him. Contrary to Caleb Williams.
