It took just two games for Bryce Young‘s luck as a QB1 in Carolina to run out in the new season. Many in the NFL community voiced their opinions after new head coach Dave Canales chose to bench the former first-overall selection.
As a Heisman winner and first overall choice who spent time with the team, Cam Newton is all too familiar with what a rookie quarterback like rookie needs to turn things around. In an interview with the 4&1 podcast, Newton discussed the matter and urged the Panthers to provide his quarterback with some much-needed confidence-boosting assistance:
“Get that motherf***er some help. Some real help man. Build his confidence. That mothaf***er is walking around, playing around like a wounded duck. He don’t got no confidence bro. He’s already small as it is.”
Is Cam Newton right about Bryce Young ?
Young, in Newton’s opinion, requires a competent offensive line, a few potent tight ends, rushers, and defense. He went on to say that although highly respected coach Dave Canales is a brilliant coach, his strength is in the passing game rather than the running game.
Some form of the ground game is essential, even for a dual-threat quarterback like Bryce, who lacks the running ability. In fact, Newton says it’s even more important for a shot-caller like Bryce.
Newton noted that in addition to TEs like Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey and a strong offensive line, he had some running game when he arrived in Carolina. Now that Love has been drafted, the team must take responsibility and assist him instead of benching him.
While Young has admitted to his mistakes and pledged to do better, he was taken aback by the news and didn’t anticipate being benched. Newton, though, doesn’t believe that Young held back and stated his mind. Cam decided to take care of that for the young quarterback.
