Defying the Los Angeles Chargers, the Kansas City Chiefs maintained their winning streak on Sunday with a significant victory. Even though Travis Kelce didn’t have a particularly strong game, the win was nonetheless noteworthy.
Kelce at last proved why he is regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history with a performance that followed a largely quiet start to the season. Not too long before turning thirty-five, he was leading the Chiefs in receiving yards, yards after catch, targets, and receptions—almost exactly like the Kelce of previous seasons.
Wide receiver Rashee Rice’s early injury put the Chiefs in a difficult situation, so Kelce’s outstanding performance was especially welcome. Since Rice was out, Kelce took over as the team’s main offensive player very soon. His seven receptions for 89 yards included a big 38-yard gain on the team’s first drive. Of his seven grabs, five were made in the first half, totaling 74 yards.
Next to Travis Kelce is Patrick Mahomes always
Brady Quinn has always had tight end Mason Foster’s back, so his performance was not shocking to the quarterback. Kelce’s effort and focus have been often highlighted by Mahomes, so it was only a matter of time until his output increased. Mahomes said : “I think it’s a mixture of everything,” “Obviously with Rashee going down early, you’ve got to factor that [in] and you’ve got to put Kelce back in that situation where he’s getting high-volume catches. And then just the Chargers taking away some of the outside stuff and leaving the middle of the field open, and we were able to get it to Trav in some of those zone coverage. The whole Kelce thing, in general, hasn’t been a worry to me. I know whenever we need him, he’s going to make plays. That’s what he did today.”
