In a recent court case, a Texas Judge showed compassion and gave a young man a second chance by not sending him to prison. However, the judge’s comments during the sentencing have sparked controversy and raised questions about the professionalism and appropriateness of their remarks.
During the trial, the judge expressed her concern for the defendant’s well-being if he were sent to prison. The judge got real with the young man by telling him how he will be passed around for ramen noodles, cigarettes, oranges and dessert in prison. These comments were seen by many as unprofessional and insensitive, and for others, the judge just saved a young man’s life from being destroyed.
According to Judge Boyd, she previously ordered that the young man have a curfew, take anger classes, not have contact with his stepfather, amongst many other things. When asked if he completed any part of said probation, he said “no”.
As a result, Judge Boyd stated what was likely to happen to him in prison. She cited an example of a previous case she had where a man was sent to prison and the first thing he did was have sex with another inmate.
So here’s to Judge Thompson and his compassionate approach to justice. May we all be inspired to see the potential in others and give them the second chances they deserve.
