The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues its legacy of thrilling storytelling with Captain America: Brave New World, a film that not only honors the franchise’s past but also forges an exciting new path forward. Starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, the film cements his place as the new Captain America in a gripping, action-packed adventure filled with heart, political intrigue, and powerful performances.
From the very first scene, Brave New World sets the tone for an intense and thought-provoking journey. The action sequences are as electrifying as ever, blending high-stakes combat with emotional depth. Director Julius Onah masterfully balances explosive set pieces with character-driven moments, allowing Sam Wilson’s struggle to live up to the Captain America mantle to shine through in a meaningful way.
Mackie delivers a standout performance, portraying Sam with a mix of strength, vulnerability, and unwavering determination. One of the film’s greatest strengths is its ability to address real-world themes without feeling forced. The supporting cast, including Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres and Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, elevate the narrative with compelling performances that add weight to the story’s stakes.
Visually there are still some issues. It doesn’t quite live up to some of the early MCU movies like The Winter Solider. The fight choreography can feel a little cut and paste, where you can tell it is two actors fighting instead of looking like an actual fight.
One critique I have is the forced comedy in the movie doesn’t quite land and doesn’t seem to fit into the severe themes of what is going on. Once the movie gets going and the jokes are put aside, that is when the film really starts to pick up steam.
Overall, Captain America: Brave New World is the type of movie that harkens back to the old days of the MCU, proving that Sam Wilson is more than worthy of carrying the shield. With its blend of action, emotion, and timely storytelling, the film not only satisfies long-time fans but also lays the groundwork for an exciting future. Not quite as great as say Civil War or Winter Solider, but better than the latest Ant Man movie or the Marvels.
