Omar Khan Explains the Reasons Behind George Pickens Being Traded to the Cowboys

After a standout year in 2023, George Pickens was anticipated to be the top wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the coming years. He had already proven that the franchise’s investment in him as a second-round draft pick was justified, but there were increasing worries about his maturity issues.

By the 2025 offseason, despite accumulating 2,841 receiving yards over his first three seasons, the Steelers decided to trade him for just a 2026 third-round pick, along with a minor value exchange with the Dallas Cowboys.

While the team has successfully filled Pickens’ role with D.K. Metcalf, fans and analysts continue to express doubts about this decision.

Omar Khan gets questioned on George Pickens’ trade

Fortunately, the self-proclaimed host of The Rich Eisen Show took the opportunity to engage in a conversation with the team’s general manager, Omar Khan, directly questioning him about it. He was asked: “Why did George Pickens have to go despite developing him?”

Khan replied: “I’ll just say, as we went through the offseason and the process, it just became evident that, for both sides, a fresh start was the best thing,”. “It just made sense for both of us.”

To put it simply, Khan’s response, though lacking depth, indicates that Pickens’ connections with different personnel in Pittsburgh have deteriorated beyond salvage. It no longer matters who was to blame for the issues, whether it was the Steelers or Pickens himself, since Khan’s concise remark brings closure to the entire situation.
