ESPN’s Shams Charania claimed on Saturday that Luka Doncic had agreed to a maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, worth $165 million over three years.
In the middle of the previous NBA season, 26-year-old Doncic was unexpectedly traded to the Lakers. Alongside LeBron James, Doncic’s first half-season in purple and gold went ok. He helped the Lakers qualify for the playoffs, but the Minnesota Timberwolves defeated them in five games in the first round. Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game during the 2024–25 campaign.
Doncic could have waited until next summer to accept an even more expensive contract as an unrestricted free agent, but he still had one year left on his previous max deal. However, it appears that he wanted to demonstrate his dedication to Los Angeles as soon as possible. According to Charania, Doncic’s agreement keeps him with the Lakers until 2028, when he will be 29 and eligible for another max contract worth about $500 million.
The future of the Lakers is certain. As James completes his last NBA season, Doncic will serve as the team’s spokesperson.
