Mitchell Trubisky Explains How Caleb Williams Can Be a Success

Even Caleb Williams, the first overall pick in the 2024 draft, was viewed as a generational prospect with all the qualities to be a great quarterback, but as a rookie, he was unable to overcome the problems that appear to be plaguing every Chicago signal-caller. Williams showed promise in his rookie campaign, but he lost 10 straight games, took too many sacks, and battled to establish consistency while coping with coaching staff and team turnover.

Under new head coach Ben Johnson, who has established himself as one of the league’s top offensive brains in recent years, all eyes will be on Williams as he attempts to bounce back from his rookie campaign and advance.

Former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky would tell Williams to just not take the chance for granted, even though the pressure will be on and there is no assurance that he will succeed.

Mitchell Trubisky gives important advice to Caleb Williams

Through the CHGO Bears podcast, Trubisky stated: “It is a fish bowl, but at the same time I’d say enjoy it, really take it all in,”

“I only had it for four years, but I wish I had it for longer to be honest. Take it in, enjoy the process, all eyes are on you in this city. It’s really a privilege, and there is a lot of pressure that comes with that, but it’s a privilege. I miss that, it’s a lot of fun to be the franchise guy, especially in a city like this.”

Like Williams now, Trubisky, the Bears’ No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, was originally thought to be the team’s future. In his second season, he helped the Bears make it to the postseason. However, at the beginning of his fourth season, Chicago had traded for Nick Foles to contend for the starting position after declining his fifth-year option.

Trubisky would get a lot of playing time that season, but he has mostly been used as a backup quarterback while the Bears have selected two other quarterbacks in the first round since the 2020 season ended.

Williams and Trubisky are obviously different quarterbacks, and just because Trubisky can’t be the Bears’ long-term quarterback doesn’t mean he can’t. However, the position has continuously eluded the Bears since Sid Luckman resigned in the early 1950s, and Trubisky is by no means the only quarterback to flame out.
