Kyle Kuzma recently stirred up some controversy by talking about the declining IQ in the NBA. Whether you agree with him or not, it’s definitely an interesting topic to discuss.
I mean, we’ve all seen some boneheaded plays on the court, right? So Kyle isn’t out of line by sharing his thoughts on the declining IQ in the NBA.
Shedding further light on the subject in an old interview, Kuzma detailed some intricacies of the game that were no longer visible today. Despite being less than a decade into the NBA, he made some notable observations, serving as a wake-up call for bodies like the AAU and NCAA.
“Basketball has lost a lot of nuances. How many young players can make a post entry pass? How many players understand screening angles? How many understand spacing? I had to pick on cutting at the right time; those are things that help win basketball games, and everybody on the court should be able to do, not just cause you’re a star player, or you get 100 post-ups in a game, doesn’t mean you should forget about those things too, and that goes with winning.”
Sharing his assessment of the current crop of players lacking specific competencies, Kuzma heaped praise on Jimmy Butler. According to Kyle, the former Heat superstar had all the necessary components in his game that made him a complete player.
“A player like Jimmy Butler, he’s a winner. He does everything a role player does,” revealed Kuzma, who had witnessed it first-hand during the 2020 Finals in the Orlando Bubble.
But what does this mean for the future of the game? Will we see more players making silly mistakes, or is this just a temporary trend? It’s hard to say, but it’s definitely something to keep an eye on as the NBA continues to evolve. And hey, maybe this will spark some players to step up their game and prove that they’ve got the brains to back up their skills.
