According to Murphy, Martin’s concerned parents contacted authorities and asked for him to receive “medical assistance.” Martin went to a neighbor’s house and was taken into custody by police, but became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Eric Branch and David Hernandez of the San Francisco Chronicle have shared more details on Martin’s mental health struggles in the weeks leading up to his death.
The San Francisco Chronicle obtained a report from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office detailing that Doug Martin checked into the Tranquility Rehab Center facility in Castro Hills, California.
Per the sheriff’s report, Martin tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine and possessed fentanyl and a hunting knife. On Aug. 13, one of the clinic’s supervisors called police after a concerning incident involving the former Pro Bowl running back:
“Around 9 a.m. on Aug. 13, as a clinical supervisor pulled up to the center, she said she found Martin in the front driveway, dancing with blood on his hands and face. She summoned deputies, reporting that Martin had gone into a psychotic episode.
The supervisor suspected Martin had jumped out the window of his second-floor bedroom and punched the side of the rehab center. Entering the building, she found Martin’s bedroom door was “barricaded,” so she kicked it open, she told deputies. Martin’s window was open, with the screen pushed out.
When two deputies showed up, they asked Martin to sit on a fountain wall. While he complied, he seemed “extremely paranoid,” according to the report. Concerned he was in trouble, he asked “if everything was going to be OK.”
Per the report, Martin became agitated and paranoid, attempting to resist arrest as police tried to handcuff them. Martin then “slapped” one of the deputies, who punched him in the nose and mouth.
Martin continued to resist arrest as police and paramedics tried to detain him. Multiple officers were able to hold him down and put him on a gurney before “injecting him in the shoulder.”
Doug Martin’s death is a reminder that mental health issues should be treated taken seriously by authorities in charge.
