As the defensive coordinator for the Giants in the past, North Carolina coach Bill Belichick won two Super Bowls, but he doesn’t seem ready to return to New York City anytime soon.
In a statement released on Friday night via ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Belichick stated that he is completely committed to the Tar Heels and would not seek NFL options.
Belichick uttered:
“Despite circulating rumors, I have not and will not pursue any NFL head coaching vacancies,”
“Since arriving in Chapel Hill, my commitment to the UNC football program has not waivered. We have tremendous support from the university, our alumni, and the entire Carolina community.”
The 73-year-old Belichick has endured a tumultuous first season with the Tar Heels. With straight victories against Syracuse and Stanford, North Carolina has steadily improved from its 2-5 start and is now squarely in the running for bowl eligibility.
Belichick, regarded as the best coach in professional football, won Super Bowls XXI and XXV with New York in 1991 before winning six more with the Patriots.
Here is the interesting thing: The Giants had no interest in Belichick.
