SYRACUSE, NY— It took a half of football for North Carolina to find its rhythm, but once the Tar Heels did, they never looked back. After a sluggish start, UNC erupted in the second half, outscoring Syracuse 21–0 to secure a 27–10 victory at JMA Wireless Dome. The win marked Bill Belichick’s first ACC triumph as North Carolina’s head coach, and for the first time all season, his team looked like one capable of turning the corner.
The Tar Heels’ adjustments after halftime were textbook Belichick — disciplined defense, patient offense, and control of the line of scrimmage. Gio Lopez steadied, the run game began to wear down the Orange front, and the defense made Syracuse’s young quarterback look every bit like a freshman making his debut.
That quarterback, Joe Filardi, was thrust into the spotlight after head coach Fran Brown decided to make a change following a winless October for Rickie Collins. The rookie’s first outing was rough — just 4-of-18 passing for 39 yards — as Syracuse failed to find any sort of offensive rhythm. Sophomore running back Yasin Willis managed 61 rushing yards, but the Orange couldn’t sustain drives or finish possessions. Since losing starter Steve Angeli earlier in the year, Syracuse has searched for stability under center, and it’s costing them.
The loss extends Syracuse’s skid to five straight, and the heat is starting to rise under Brown. Some fans are already calling for a change, but with high-profile openings like Penn State looming and more expected to come, Brown’s future could hinge on how he navigates the final stretch.
Up next is a daunting road trip to Miami — not exactly a get-right game for a team struggling to score. For Brown, the challenge is as much psychological as tactical: keep his players bought in, keep competing, and try to salvage something from what’s quickly slipping into a lost season
