Tyrese Maxey Sets Records in Win vs Bucks

Tyrese Maxey had himself a record game on Thursday, hitting 54 points with nine assists, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a 123–114 overtime win against the Bucks.

In just 47 minutes on the court, the 76ers guard shot 18 of 30 from the field, including 12 of 14 at the free-throw line and 6 of 15 from beyond the arc.

Maxey’s 54 points against the Spurs on April 7, 2024, surpassed his previous record of 52 points in a game. In February 2024 and November 2023, he also scored 51 and 50 points, respectively, to break 50.

Maxey’s 54 points against the Spurs on April 7, 2024, surpassed his previous record of 52 points in a game. In February 2024 and November 2023, he also scored 51 and 50 points, respectively, to break 50. The 6’2″ point guard becomes the 41st player in NBA history to have four 50-point games in his career.

Maxey, 25, has scored at least 30 points in nine of the season’s first 15 games and is currently averaging 33.4 points per game. With his 54-point outburst on Thursday night, Maxey surpassed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (32.0 PPG) to take second place among scoring leaders, behind Luka Dončić (34.6 PPG).

Philadelphia is 9-6 and sixth in the Eastern Conference at the beginning of the season thanks to Maxey’s efforts.

Maxey’s ascent has been nonlinear. He was a burst-of-speed role player early in his career who made the other team adjust their tempo. However, he took control of the offense once James Harden left for the Clippers, and in response, he became one of the NBA’s most prolific scorers. Over his four seasons in the league, he has steadily improved, averaging 17.5, 20.3, 25.9, and 26.3 points. It feels different this year—like a jump from promising to indisputable.
