Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens has ignited a firestorm of controversy following Thursday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions, taking to social media in an explosive, now-deleted tirade against former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman.
The drama began in the aftermath of the Cowboys’ 44-30 defeat, where Pickens struggled to make an impact, recording just five catches for 37 yards. His performance drew sharp rebuke from Sherman, now an analyst for Amazon Prime Video, who accused the young receiver of giving up on his team when they needed him most.
Sherman’s Critique: “Uninterested in Playing Football”
Sherman didn’t mince words during the post-game broadcast, singling out Pickens for what he perceived as a lack of effort, particularly after fellow receiver CeeDee Lamb exited the game with a concussion.
“The big story here is George Pickens,” Sherman said. “George Pickens, throughout the game, especially late in the game, just looked uninterested. Uninterested in playing football. And that’s what you can’t have. If you’re going to be a superstar… you can’t ever be disengaged.”
Sherman highlighted specific plays where Pickens appeared to jog through routes or show poor body language. “You can’t just disappear in these games… You can’t be the guy and half-ass it. I’m sorry. It’s unacceptable,” Sherman added, warning that such tape could jeopardize Pickens’ future contract negotiations.
Pickens’ Deleted Response: “Richard Py A* Sherman”**
On Friday, Pickens fired back on Instagram with a scathing, NSFW message that was quickly deleted but preserved by fans and media. In the post, Pickens dismissed Sherman’s analysis and attacked his legacy.
“This is a team game lmao I’m not the only one on the team,” Pickens wrote. “Stop becoming a analyst and talking about one player when he playin a teams game. Lots of s*** has to go right for Explosive. Plays.”
Pickens then turned personal, writing:
“RICHARD PY ASS SHERMAN WHO BTW AINT SHH WITHOUT THE LEGION OF BOOM WE ALL REMEMBER SAN FRANCISCO BROTHER… Don’t speak on me unless you know the game of football as a former player not a driding fan/analyst that act like double team is not a thing… Knowing you played ball which show me you a LEACH WEIRDO.”

Cowboys Head Coach Brian Schottenheimer Responds
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed the situation on Friday, confirming he was aware of the post and planned to intervene.
“I’m aware of what was supposedly put out there,” Schottenheimer told reporters. “I understand it’s been taken down, but I will be talking to him, just checking on him. Again, this is unfortunately things that we deal with in this profession.”
Despite the off-field drama, Schottenheimer defended Pickens’ on-field value, stating, “I’m going to judge George on the body of work and his body of work shows that he is an elite player.”
As the Cowboys (6-6-1) fight for a playoff spot, the team must now manage not only their on-field struggles but also the renewed questions about their star receiver’s maturity—questions that have followed Pickens from Pittsburgh to Dallas.
