Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has reportedly reopened discussions with the franchise regarding his future, sparking renewed speculation about a potential trade request as the team struggles early in the season.
According to a report by ESPN, Antetokounmpo and his representation have engaged the organization in conversations about whether his long-term career goals are best served in Milwaukee or elsewhere. The development comes as the Bucks sit at a disappointing 9-13 record, well outside the top tier of the Eastern Conference.
Sources told ESPN that while no formal trade request has been made, the two-time MVP is weighing his options. The report indicates that a resolution on his immediate future could be expected in the coming weeks.
Antetokounmpo, 30, has spent his entire 13-season NBA career with Milwaukee, leading the franchise to an NBA championship in 2021. Despite his individual dominance this season—averaging 30.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game—the team has failed to find consistency.
This is not the first time Antetokounmpo’s future has been the subject of internal discussions. ESPN insider Shams Charania reported that the Bucks and the New York Knicks held preliminary talks in August regarding a potential trade package, though those conversations did not result in a deal. Reports in October suggested the Knicks remained a preferred destination for the forward.
If Antetokounmpo were to request a trade, he would immediately become the most coveted player on the market, likely commanding a historic return of draft capital and young talent. The NBA’s unofficial trade season begins on Dec. 15, when players who signed contracts in the offseason become eligible to be moved. The league’s trade deadline is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2026.
The Bucks have not issued an official comment on the report. Antetokounmpo is under contract with the team through the 2027-28 season, with a player option for the final year.
