LSU assistant Charlie Weis Jr., who recently joined new coach Lane Kiffin with the Tigers, will be permitted to go back to Ole Miss and act as the team’s offensive coordinator during the College Football Playoff.
Weis, who has been the Rebels’ offensive coordinator under Kiffin since 2022, was one of several assistants who immediately joined Kiffin at LSU. However, he will return to Ole Miss to collaborate with new Rebels coach Pete Golding and the staff for the CFP.
Ole Miss concluded the regular season with an 11-1 record and is currently ranked No. 6 in the latest CFP standings.
Kiffin made a statement:
“With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs,”
“I’ve already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss.”
Ole Miss confirmed Weis’ temporary return, naming him alongside Golding, quarterbacks coach Joe Judge, and six other assistants for the CFP squad.
Kiffin had expressed a desire to continue as Ole Miss’ head coach even after accepting the LSU position but was informed on Sunday that it was not permissible. Ole Miss acted swiftly to elevate Golding, the team’s defensive coordinator, to the role of permanent head coach.
