Victor Wembanyama Reveals His Grandma Died Mere Hours Before NBA Cup Final

After learning of his grandmother’s passing only hours before tip-off, San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama played in Tuesday’s NBA Cup Final against the New York Knicks with a heavy heart. The big man fought back tears after the game.

After the 124-113 loss to the Knicks, Wembanyama was talking with the media when the 7’4″ center became very emotional at the podium. He took a moment to collect himself before apologising to everyone there.

Wembanyama stated:

“Sorry,” “I lost somebody today.”

Shortly after, the 21-year-old found out about his grandmother’s death in his native France earlier in the day, according to The Athletic. Before returning to the changing room, Wemby answered one more question.

The third-year professional put up a strong stat line against the Knicks despite dealing with a significant loss off the court. He scored eighteen points, pulled down six rebounds, dished out an assist, two blocks, and a steal in just twenty-five minutes off the bench.

Due to possible burial plans for his grandmother, it’s uncertain if he would miss any of the team’s next games. There won’t be much time off for the Spurs. After playing the Washington Wizards on Thursday, they will go to Atlanta to play the Hawks and Wizards once more before heading back to Texas.
