What’s next for Sacramento State Football After Brennan Marion Departure

Sacramento State Football is making headlines in the sports world these days largely thanks to the transitional period that the program is in. While the product on the field has been exciting this year, the headlines have been generally about the off-field changes and challenges they are facing.

The biggest story is that the Hornets are working towards a move from the FCS to FBS and hope to build a premier college football program in Northern California.  With significant changes in both the football and basketball programs, the Hornets are on a trajectory that could redefine their athletic identity but we’ll focus on the gridiron first.

Sac State football is currently navigating a challenging phase following the departure of former head coach Brennan Marion, who moved on to join Deion Sanders at Colorado. Marion is considered by many as an offensive guru and has taken the offensive coordinator job with the Buffaloes.

This transition comes after a season where the Hornets finished with a record of 7-5, a result that left fans wanting more. There was a solid foundation under Marion but his departure leaves the program in a precarious position. The team is now faced with the urgency of finding a new head coach and solidifying its schedule, which is currently sparse with only a few games lined up for next season thanks to their FCS independent status.

One name that has emerged as a potential candidate is Troy Taylor, who previously enjoyed success at Sac State before a brief, tumultuous tenure at Stanford. Despite the rumors, the interviewing process is still in its early stages, and other names like Alonzo Carter and Chris Richardson are also being considered. Stability seems to be the priority as the program looks to rebuild and refocus.

The Hornets are also grappling with their identity as an FCS independent team, which complicates scheduling and recruitment. With the transfer portal opening, the team is seeing players exit, further adding to the challenges so time is of the essence. The push toward becoming an FBS program remains a viable goal, especially given Sacramento’s growing market and the financial backing from the university.

Sac State football is at a pivotal juncture as they must navigate a coaching search while rebuilding its schedule and roster, all while holding onto aspirations of moving to the FBS. There are some significant challenges ahead for the Hornets and the future is unclear but the school’s commitment to this growth and change appears stronger than ever.
