The sudden firing and subsequent arrest of Sherrone Moore have cast a harsh spotlight on the personal life of the former Michigan football coach, whose public image was built largely on his identity as a devoted husband and father.
Moore, 39, was terminated by the University of Michigan on Wednesday for cause, following an investigation that revealed an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
Social media has been perpeturating an unconfirmed rumor that Moore was having an affair with his assistant Paige Shiver and potentially got her pregnant.
Hours later, he was detained by police in Saline, Michigan, amid unverified reports of a domestic crisis at his home.
A Partnership Under Scrutiny
Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, since 2015. The couple met while Moore was coaching tight ends at Central Michigan and have been a visible fixture in the Ann Arbor community since he joined the Wolverines staff in 2018.
Kelli Moore, a former college athlete who played soccer at Centre College in Kentucky, has frequently been described by Moore as the bedrock of his coaching success. Her social media biography describes her as a “Jesus follower, Coach Moore’s wife, mom, and LGBTQ+ ally.”
Together, they have three daughters—Shiloh, Solei, and Sadie. The children were often seen celebrating on the field with their father during Michigan’s 2023 national championship run, images that endeared the family to the fanbase.
Concerns for Mental Health
The rapid unraveling of Moore’s career has sparked serious concerns regarding his well-being. Following the exposure of the affair and his public dismissal, law enforcement was called to the Moore residence.
While police have not officially released the specific nature of the call, unconfirmed reports circulating online suggest a domestic dispute occurred between Moore and his wife after the allegations surfaced. Speculation on social media and message boards has centered on rumors that Moore threatened self-harm during the altercation, prompting the police intervention.
The Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety confirmed that Moore was transferred to their custody for investigation into potential charges but declined to comment on his medical status or the specific details of the incident.
A Shattered Image
For a coach who famously told national television audiences “I love the s*** out of you” regarding his players and staff, the allegations of infidelity and domestic turmoil stand in stark contrast to the values of loyalty and family he preached.
As the university moves forward with interim coach Biff Poggi, the Moore family is left to navigate a private crisis that has become a very public spectacle. The university has offered no comment on the situation beyond its initial statement confirming the firing.
