An arrest warrant has been issued for Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion known as “Tank,” in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident dating to October, police said Wednesday. Authorities are now seeking to take Davis into custody on multiple felony charges, stirring fresh off-ring controversy for one of the sport’s most prominent boxers.
Miami Gardens Police held a briefing in which officials confirmed the warrant includes charges of false imprisonment, battery and attempted kidnapping, all tied to the same alleged Oct. 27 incident that has drawn scrutiny since late last year. Law enforcement officials said they are working with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to locate Davis.
Davis, 31, a native of Baltimore and one of boxing’s top draws, has not been taken into custody at the time of the announcement. Police did not disclose his exact whereabouts. Investigators have asked anyone with information on his location to contact authorities.
The warrant stems from allegations that stem from a 2025 incident involving Davis’ former romantic partner. Local news outlets previously reported that the victim said Davis grabbed her by the neck and hair at a Miami venue before forcibly detaining her, allegations that contributed to the cancellation of a planned exhibition fight between Davis and Jake Paul last year.
Davis’ legal troubles are not new. The 30-plus knockout artist has faced previous domestic violence and assault allegations, including a July 2025 battery arrest in Miami Beach and other confrontations that have drawn police attention over the years. Some earlier cases were dropped or resulted in declined prosecution, but they have fed a narrative of repeated off-ring issues for the star boxer.
Representatives for Davis did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It remains unclear whether Davis has retained legal counsel specifically for the newest charges or how his team plans to respond if and when he is taken into custody.
The boxing world reacted quickly to the news, with some promoters and fighters saying they hope the legal process unfolds promptly, while others urged fans to wait for all facts to emerge before passing judgment.
Davis holds the WBA lightweight title and remains one of the highest-profile fighters in professional boxing. But the arrest warrant raises immediate questions about his future fights and the status of his championship reign pending the legal outcome.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and additional details could be released as law enforcement moves closer to serving the warrant.
