Vacation almost turned into “Locked Up Abroad” after Deandre Ayton had himself a little airport adventure back home in the Bahamas. And by adventure, I mean he was reportedly detained and searched over suspected weed. Yes, weed.
Somewhere, officials probably thought they were about to have the most dramatic shift of the week. Instead? Plot twist. Clean as a whistle.
According to reports, Ayton was stopped and searched at the airport because authorities believed he might be carrying marijuana. I don’t know who tipped who, I don’t know who smelled what. I just know somebody thought they were about to find something spicy.
Spoiler alert: they didn’t.
After the search, Ayton came out clean and was released. No charges, no dramatic mugshot and no courtroom saga. Just a very awkward airport delay.
The Central Division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force told us Ayton — a native of the Bahamas — was searched at the Lyden Pindling International Airport after he was allegedly spotted smoking weed on the premises.
But when reached by phone Tuesday evening, his attorney, Devard Francis, painted a different picture.
Francis tells us his client was briefly held by authorities who searched his bag for weed. After, DA was released, and no charges were filed. Francis said Ayton is on his way back to L.A. to rejoin the Lakers as they get ready to kick off the second half of the NBA season.
Imagine being an NBA star, minding your business, and suddenly you’re in a side room explaining that you are, in fact, just traveling like a normal 7-footer.
But in the end, Ayton walked out clean. No harm done. Just another reminder that being famous doesn’t get you a free pass through security.
Next time, though? He might want to show up extra early, because nothing ruins a travel day like a surprise “detained but actually innocent” subplot.
