Ex-Jets Darron Lee Broke His Girlfriend Gabriella Perpetuo Neck Before Stabbing & Biting Her

Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee was ordered held without bond Wednesday after a judge heard graphic testimony about the brutal slaying of his girlfriend in a Tennessee home where blood was found in nearly every room.

Lee, 31, a first-round draft pick by the New York Jets in 2016, faces charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the Feb. 5 death of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo at a rented house in Ooltewah, a Chattanooga suburb. Prosecutors have indicated they intend to seek the death penalty, citing the case’s eligibility for capital punishment under Tennessee law due to aggravating factors such as the severity of the violence.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call for CPR assistance at 2 Snow Cone Way, where they found Perpétuo’s body on the living room floor. She was wearing pants but no top, according to court testimony. An autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma, with injuries including severe brain trauma, a broken neck, widespread bruising, a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh, and stab wounds to her legs.

Detective Brian Lockhart described a chaotic crime scene during Lee’s bond hearing in Hamilton County Criminal Court. Blood was detected “in just about every room,” including on walls, floors, staircases, handrails and a vehicle in the garage that tested positive using a chemical agent. Investigators also noted a shattered microwave, scattered glass throughout the home, empty alcohol bottles and cleaning supplies like bleach wipes and a spray bottle upstairs.

Lee, who was at the scene when authorities arrived, told deputies Perpétuo suffered from narcolepsy and may have fallen in the shower. Prosecutors called this explanation inconsistent with the evidence. Lee’s passport was found in a bag containing clothing and personal items inside a BMW in the garage, raising concerns about potential flight risk.

District Attorney Coty Wamp argued against bond, highlighting Lee’s prior convictions. He was on probation for an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge in Florida, which he violated by moving to Tennessee without permission. Lee also had a 2023 guilty plea to domestic violence charges in Ohio, where records show he pushed a woman and punched her multiple times.

Judge Tori Smith denied bond, ruling Lee posed a significant danger to the community. No plea has been entered, and a trial date has not been set.

Lee played five seasons in the NFL, including stints with the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and others, before retiring. He won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2020.

Authorities have urged awareness of domestic violence warning signs, such as isolation, controlling behavior and physical threats, in light of the case.
