Boxing fans, get ready, or don’t because according to Floyd Mayweather, this so-called rematch with Manny Pacquiao is not a real fight. No, it’s an exhibition. Translation: lower your expectations immediately.
Yes, the two legends might step into the ring again. Flashbacks to 2015 are loading. The hype, the promos, the endless talking, and then the actual fight happened. Let’s just say some fans are still waiting for their refund.
Now Floyd is back, making sure nobody gets confused this time. He’s basically saying, “Relax. This is not war. This is just vibes with gloves.”
An exhibition, in boxing terms, is like a friendly game. Nobody’s record is on the line, nobody is going all out. It’s more about entertainment, movement, and maybe showing off a little. Think of it as boxing with a seatbelt on.
The pair are scheduled to contest a rematch of the richest fight in history in Las Vegas on September 19. Netflix will broadcast the second instalment of their rivalry, in what was expected to be the 49-year-old Mayweather’s first professional fight since 2017.
However, Mayweather claimed that would not be the case while speaking to Vegas Sports Today, as well as suggesting that the contest could take place away from the Las Vegas Sphere, which was announced as the venue last month. Asked about fighting at the Sphere, Mayweather said: “As of right now, we don’t actually know where the fight is going to be at.
“The Sphere is one of the places that they talked about, so we don’t know if it’s 100 per cent going to be there.” He added: “This is not actually a fight, it’s an exhibition, so we’re going to do it again and hopefully we’ll entertain the people. We’re both winners, it’s an exhibition so we’re both winners.”
At the end of the day, Floyd is just being honest. He’s not promising fireworks, he’s not selling a war. He’s selling a moment. A nostalgic, slightly safer, probably still very profitable moment.
So if you tune in expecting a classic, you might be disappointed, but if you treat it like a casual reunion with gloves, you’ll be just fine.
Just remember: exhibition, not a fight!
