Maycee Barber was knocked unconscious by a left hook from Alexa Grasso and then placed in a rear-naked choke while already out cold during their women’s flyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 271 on Saturday night.
The terrifying sequence unfolded at Climate Pledge Arena with about 2:42 left in the opening round. Grasso connected with a hard left hand that dropped Barber to the canvas. Grasso immediately followed up with additional strikes before locking in the choke as Barber lay motionless. Referee Mike Beltran rushed in to stop the fight, and medical personnel entered the Octagon to attend to the 27-year-old Barber.

Barber, who entered the fight on a seven-fight winning streak, grabbed instinctively at the referee before rolling onto the mat and remaining down for several minutes. She eventually sat up, stood on her own power and left the cage under her own power after Grasso was declared the winner by knockout.
Barber was transported to a local hospital for precautionary CT scans of her head and face, a standard protocol following such a finish.
As of Sunday, Barber’s team reported she is recovering well with no serious injuries. Her boyfriend, Oscar Herrera, posted from the hospital:
“Part of the game. Congrats to Alexa, we got caught but are OK. Will be back soon, thanks for everyone checking in.” Barber reposted the message on social media, along with a photo showing her in good spirits.
Her striking coach, Guilherme Faria, added in a separate post:
“Not our night. This is the fight game and sometimes things don’t go our way. No blame, no excuses, just lessons. We learn, we grow and we come back stronger. God is good all the time.”
The loss dropped Barber to 15-3. Grasso improved to 17-5-1 with what many observers called one of the most violent and memorable finishes in recent UFC history.
UFC officials confirmed Barber was one of three fighters from the card transported to the hospital for evaluation, along with Ignacio Bahamondes and Ricky Simon.
Barber had returned to the Octagon after overcoming previous medical issues that sidelined her in 2025. Her camp has indicated she will use the loss as motivation to return stronger. No further medical updates were immediately available Sunday afternoon.
