The Los Angeles Rams just did something that made fans blink twice, refresh their feeds, and then blink again for good measure. With the No. 13 pick in the NFL Draft, they selected quarterback Ty Simpson. And yes, people are confused.
Because let’s be honest. When you hear “Rams draft a QB,” your brain immediately goes, “Wait, don’t they already have one?” Somewhere, Matthew Stafford probably looked up like, “Oh… we’re doing this today?”
Now, this isn’t necessarily chaos. It’s just unexpected chaos. The Rams basically walked into the draft like, “You know what we need? Another quarterback.” Not offensive line help, not defense. Quarterback, because why not keep things spicy?
But after the pick was made, coach Sean McVay made it clear: “This is Matthew’s team.”
Stafford, 38, who is entering his 18th season, was named NFL MVP in 2025. He has not said how long he intends to continue playing.
McVay said he had told Stafford that the team planned to take Simpson at No. 13 but added that he wanted to keep those conversations between the two. Asked for Stafford’s reaction to the news, McVay added: “Oh, he was great.”
“He’s a stud,” McVay said. “I mean, he’s always first class in every sense of the word.”
For Simpson, though, this is a wild opportunity. He goes from college standout to first-round pick overnight. Now he gets to learn under a veteran, adjust to the NFL, and deal with fans analyzing his every throw like it’s a final exam.
And you already know what’s coming next. Every time Stafford throws an incomplete pass, someone will tweet, “Put Simpson in.” It’s the unofficial rule of backup quarterbacks everywhere.
In the end, the Rams made a bold move. Maybe it’s genius, maybe it’s confusing and maybe it’s both.
Either way, one thing is clear: draft night stayed undefeated.
