Former Los Angeles Lakers star Rick Fox was involved in a heated altercation at a campaign rally Wednesday while seeking a seat in the Bahamian House of Assembly, authorities and the candidate said.
Fox, a Free National Movement candidate for the Garden Hills constituency, and his campaign team were setting up a tent at the event to solicit votes when a dispute broke out with a bystander over the tent’s placement, according to a video of the incident and Fox’s account. The man argued with Fox’s team and used profanity, telling them he didn’t care about any rules, witnesses and Fox said.

Fox, 56, lunged toward the man but was restrained by members of his team. A shouting match followed, during which Fox pushed away an aide trying to separate the parties. No punches were thrown, and the situation de-escalated before it turned physical, video posted on social media showed.
Police responded to the scene, removed the agitator and charged him, Fox said Thursday.
“The agitator in the situation was pulled away by police and charged,” Fox told reporters. “He threatened my campaign manager’s life and threatened my life. That context is not in that video.”
Fox added: “Some people are used to, this time of year, being bullies. And we’re not standing for that. … If you’re going to swear and threaten people’s lives and say you’re going to your car to get something, then I’m going to react. I’m going to defend my team, I’m going to defend myself.”
The former NBA champion, who won three titles with the Lakers, was born in Canada but raised in the Bahamas. He announced his candidacy with the opposition Free National Movement last November ahead of the May 12 general election.
Fox compared his response to his days as an enforcer on the basketball court.
“I stood up to the bully,” he said in a separate statement.
No injuries were reported. Bahamian police did not immediately release details of the charge against the man or confirm his identity.
The incident occurred as parties ramp up campaigning in the lead-up to the election. Fox has positioned himself as a fighter against “political bullies” in recent rallies.
