This offseason, Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving is in the news, but it’s not for a reason that any of us could have predicted a week ago. Irving chose not to travel to Europe, where many members of the championship-winning 2015–16 Cleveland Cavaliers are presently having a reunion.
Irving eventually broke his silence on Instagram on Friday night after receiving criticism from several of his former teammates.
That message is quite obvious and loud.
Irving doesn’t feel obligated to attend the reunion, but he is proud of what they achieved as brothers back then—overcoming a 3-1 hole against the 73-9 Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. With this, people have undoubtedly been exaggerating the situation.
When photos and videos of the reunion started to circulate online, all of this commotion ensued. Irving was absent, but LeBron James, Kevin Love, J.R. Smith, Richard Jefferson, Channing Frye, and Tristan Thompson were all present. When fans questioned why the nine-time All-Star wasn’t present, Smith said he was invited but chose to ignore them.
Then, NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson asserted that Irving had not abandoned his former Cavaliers colleagues.
