A college coach, Dusty May has decided to join the NBA and take over a Dallas squad that is rapidly declining and under intense scrutiny.
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Michigan head coach Dusty May, according to ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania. During his two seasons with the Wolverines, he went 64-13 and helped Michigan win the national championship in 2026.

May led Florida Atlantic to consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Final Four in 2023, while serving as head coach prior to joining Michigan. May’s winning percentage over his career is 69.9%.
After Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers last year, the Mavericks franchise seemed to be in free fall. The Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison in November as a result of that action. Jason Kidd, the former head coach of the Mavericks, was also sacked after the team finished 26-56 in the previous season.
Dallas has concentrated on a complete rebuild under the direction of Cooper Flagg on the court after the Doncic deal. Flagg now has a new head coach to continue developing under with May’s hiring.
Ironically, the latest college coach to join an NBA franchise was Michigan’s John Beilein, who joined the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019.
