Joey Bosa, a free agent with the Bills and a former third-round pick in the NFL Draft, is “on the brink of retiring” at the age of thirty.
Since joining the Buffalo Bills in 2025, the fierce free-agent defensive end and former third-overall selection pick has not signed a contract.
Additionally, Bosa’s brother Nick acknowledged that he had been playing golf and presumably wasn’t “thinking too much about football” when questioned about the 30-year-old’s future last month.
Adam Schefter of ESPN has now made his own disclosure, stating that Joey may be completely over the game. According to Schefter’s podcast, Joey Bosa has probably played his final NFL game.
Schefter acknowledged that Joey might be persuaded to play with his brother in San Francisco, but he said it’s much more likely that he will retire from the NFL.
Schefter posed a rhetorical question:
‘Now, again, could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again?’ ‘Yeah, absolutely. We saw it happen last year with Philip Rivers [and the Indianapolis Colts], so you never know when a player is fully done and when he’s not done.
‘But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would have happened already,’ Schefter continued. ‘I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would have happened already.’
Nick and Joey, the sons of former NFL defensive end John Bosa, both attended Ohio State before becoming some of the best players at the position in the professional ranks. However, because to a series of ailments, Joey has not yet amassed more than 6.5 sacks in a single season, despite having 10.5 sacks with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.
Joey only recorded five sacks in 2025 despite playing in 15 games.
