Bailey Wigness, the head softball coach at Gardner-Webb University, will not have her contract renewed.
Following an examination following allegations of improper behavior with student-athletes, the decision was made. Allegations cover 11 years and several schools.
The contents of the complaints against Bailey Wigness are graphic and go back more than ten years. In sports, head coaches abusing their position is a regrettable side consequence.
She was accused by former Boise State and University of South Carolina-Beaufort players of pursuing athletes for intimate connections. They said that after isolating players and pursuing them directly, she kicked those who found out about the connections off the team.
According to a former player, Bailey was expelled from the team after allegedly having an affair with her girlfriend. Another talked about suicidal threats at difficult times in a relationship. In an attempt to entice them closer, players reportedly claimed receiving invitations to Bailey Wigness’s house under the guise of dog sitting.
Similar issues surfaced at Gardner-Webb. Bailey Wigness and a teammate had a “weirdly close relationship,” according to a former player. Another participant claimed that when she voiced concerns to the administrators, she was retaliated against. Her softball career at the school ended unexpectedly, and she lost her scholarship for no apparent reason.
