With 53 points, Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA scoring record as the Toronto Tempo defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 125-97 on Thursday. Mabrey matched the records set by A’ja Wilson for Las Vegas at Atlanta on August 22, 2023, and Liz Cambage for Dallas against New York on July 17, 2018.
Mabrey claimed that until her sister Michaela Mabrey informed her that she was three points away while seated on the sidelines, she was ignorant of the scoring record.
Mabrey stated:
“There’s no stat board in our gym”. “After you get into a state like that, it’s kind of hard to know what you’re really doing, but my teammates made it known, so I knew I was doing something good.”
Fans cheered in recognition of her spectacular night after briefly jeering the substitution when she checked out with one minute left. Chants of “We want Mabrey!” filled the air as the clock approached zero. We’re after Mabrey!
Sandy Brondello, a tempo coach, stated:
“She wanted to come out,” “I said, ‘No, no, you’ve got to stay in for this record.'”
Following the coach’s instructions, Mabrey attempted two more 3-pointers but missed them both. Then it came time. Brondello stated:
“She was done,” “She goes, ‘I’m out.'”
Mabrey converted 10 of 12 free throws in 32 minutes, went 17 of 28 from the field, and tied the WNBA record for 3-pointers with nine in 18 attempts. Mabrey had made nine 3-pointers in two games in the previous week, including Friday’s victory over the Connecticut Sun.
