Talk about a career change. One day you’re making headlines in the adult entertainment industry, the next, you’re taking the oath as a senator. That is exactly what happened to Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, better known to many as Amaranta Hank.
The former adult film star has officially joined Colombia’s Senate after being sworn in as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact party. Safe to say, this isn’t the sequel anyone saw coming.
Ortiz’s journey has been anything but ordinary. Before entering the adult industry, she worked as a journalist. In 2017, she switched careers and became one of Colombia’s most recognizable adult performers. Two years later, she left that world behind and jumped into politics.
Now she’s back in the spotlight, but this time the cameras are inside the Senate instead of on a movie set.
One of Ortiz’s biggest goals is fighting for the rights of adult-content creators. She believes people working in the industry deserve legal protections, fair treatment, and respect. Whether people agree or disagree with her policies, she has made it clear she isn’t afraid to tackle controversial topics.
“These women have been unprotected by the state because, due to misinformation, prejudice and double standards, no one has declared to regulate it,” she said in a campaign video.
She has clapped back against critics who claim former adult stars shouldn’t run for office.
“Why can’t a woman who was in the adult industry aspire to a popularly elected office?” she said, citing past former porn stars turned politicians such as Ilona Staller – who rose to fame with her 1970s radio show “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” before becoming an Italian lawmaker.
“My experience allowed me to understand inequality, the struggle for freedom and the popular economy, arguments that I now promise to bring directly into legislative debate,” Ortiz said.
“The problem is that society consumes adult films but denies us the possibility of speaking in spaces of power.”
Social media, as expected, had an absolute field day.
Some users joked that Colombia’s Senate just became the most talked-about workplace in the country. Others praised Ortiz for proving that people can reinvent themselves and pursue completely different careers.
Ortiz was elected because she was 23rd in their list of candidates.
“I feel embraced by my people,” she said after her election win.
Ortiz is also fighting for quality mental health and campaigning for measures to prevent sexual abuse.
“There is a political transformation underway that still has a long way to go but the important thing is that it has already begun in some way,” she said.
From journalism to adult entertainment, and now to the Senate floor, Ortiz has lived several lives before turning 33. If nothing else, she’s proof that politics can produce storylines nobody could have written in advance.
