Klay Thompson apparently had some free time on Thursday. So, he jumped into a social media debate about whether he or Ray Allen is the better all-time player.
An Instagram post from the Swish List podcast asked fans to settle the argument. The replies quickly became a basketball courtroom. Fans brought statistics, others brought memories. And, of course, somebody had to bring up scoring numbers.
That somebody probably wished they had not.

Thompson jumped into the conversation and defended his résumé.

“You do realize I was the second leading scorer on two championship teams without [Kevin Durant]? You want me to go to a bad team and put up empty stats, that’s easy buddy,” he commented on the post.
He also pointed out his performance in the 2016 NBA Finals as fans downplayed his success with the Golden State Warriors.
“Holy s–t I led the 2016 playoffs in points scored you casuals,” Thompson wrote.
While most NBA players avoid discourse from fans on social media, Thompson has perhaps earned the right to defend his name after all the success he’s had during his career.
The question now is how Thompson will continue adding to his legacy.
He recently said that he wants to “compete” for a title and “play a role on a team that can make a deep playoff run,” and it’s fair to say that the Mavs aren’t exactly built to win a championship right now.
Thompson clearly believes fans should look beyond raw scoring totals when making the comparison. And judging by his response, he was not interested in quietly accepting the verdict.
Fair enough.
Just don’t expect the internet to stop arguing. Basketball fans would debate whether water is wet if there were two different opinions about it.
