Basketball is a serious business. There are points to score, games to win, and coaches to stress themselves out over every possession.
But sometimes, the basketball gods decide everyone needs a little comedy break.
That happened Wednesday when Phoenix Mercury star Kelsey Plum accidentally turned an intense game into a surprise hugging session with Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko.
No, this was not a pregame friendship moment. No, they were not celebrating a big play together. And no, the WNBA did not suddenly introduce “mandatory coach hugs” into the rulebook.
It was simply a case of Plum chasing the basketball a little too aggressively.
With less than 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter at Gateway Center in College Park, Georgia, Plum was flying down the court. She was locked in, the mission was clear: catch the pass, save the possession, and keep the play alive.
Unfortunately, the basketball had other plans.
The ball sailed out of bounds, but Plum’s momentum did not get the message. She kept sprinting along the sideline and suddenly found herself heading directly toward Smesko.

And then boom. Instead of catching a pass, Plum caught a coach.
Fortunately for Plum, Smesko was there to break her momentum. Otherwise, she could have crashed into Atlanta’s bench or, worse, suffered an injury.
It has been a whirlwind of late for the five-time WNBA All-Star. The game against the Dream was just Plum’s second with the Mercury since getting surprisingly traded by the Los Angeles Sparks to Phoenix in exchange for Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder.
As for the game, the Mercury ended up suffering a 96-82 loss despite Plum scoring 19 points on 6/10 shooting from the floor.
Phoenix’s defeat hurt the team’s chances to make the playoffs, as the Mercury drop to 12-20, 6.5 games off the final spot in the current postseason picture.
The WNBA season is filled with incredible performances, but moments like this are what make sports memorable. Not every viral moment comes from a game-winning shot or a record-breaking performance.
Sometimes, it comes from a player running full speed and accidentally turning a coach into a human crash pad.
Kelsey Plum wanted the basketball. Instead, she got a hug.
And honestly, basketball fans probably needed that laugh.
