Angel Reese was forced to depart the Atlanta Dream’s 93-91 victory over the Chicago Sky after suffering a left leg injury early in the fourth quarter.
Reese appeared to injure herself while attempting a lay-up. After tumbling on the floor, Reese briefly rose up before dropping down again. She returned to the bench but was later declared out for the remainder of the game. Before the injury, Reese had struggled offensively.
She finished with eight points, five rebounds and three turnovers in 20 minutes, shooting 3-of-13 from the field and missed her only three-point shot. Despite Reese’s exit Atlanta held on for the win as Jordin Canada scored the game-winning lay-up as time expired.
Dream head coach Karl Smesko reported that Reese was in “great spirits celebrating with her teammates” following the game. Reese “wanted to go out there and keep playing,” but Smesko “didn’t feel comfortable with it because she looked like she was in a lot of pain,” according to WNBA reporter Wilton Jackson.
Atlanta’s record now stands at 16-10 after the victory. Reese had a league-high 15.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game going into the matchup. The 24-year-old will have time to recuperate before the rest of the season because the Dream won’t play again until July 29.
