Former NBA guard J.R. Smith was arrested Tuesday on a family violence charge in Hunt County, Texas, jail records show.
Smith, a two-time NBA champion, was booked on a charge of assault causing bodily injury — family violence, according to Hunt County jail records cited by TMZ and confirmed in subsequent reports. He was being held at the Hunt County Detention Center. Jail records listed no bond as of Tuesday morning.
Authorities have not publicly released details about the alleged incident, the identity of the alleged victim, or the circumstances that led to the arrest. The case remains developing.
Smith, 40, played 16 NBA seasons and won titles with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. He was named the league’s Sixth Man of the Year with the New York Knicks in 2013. His last NBA appearance came in Game 3 of the 2020 NBA Finals.
After leaving the league, Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University, walked on to the men’s golf team, and graduated in May 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies. He has competed in amateur golf events since then.
Smith has a prior criminal history. In 2009 he served 24 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with a 2007 crash that killed one of his passengers.
No attorney for Smith had issued a public statement as of Tuesday morning. Hunt County officials had not released additional charging documents or a probable-cause affidavit.
Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
