Video: Ryan Garcia Knocks Out Conor Benn

Ryan Garcia did not need five rounds. He barely needed two.

The World Boxing Council welterweight champion dropped Conor Benn with a right hand early in the second round Saturday night and finished him against the ropes at T-Mobile Arena, retaining his title by technical knockout at 1:25. Referee Thomas Taylor waved it off after Benn rose from the knockdown but could not get off the ropes as Garcia unloaded.

It was Benn’s first stoppage loss and his first world-title fight. Garcia had predicted a knockout inside five rounds. The finish was his fastest in six years.

Garcia stunned Benn with left hooks in the first round as the Englishman tried to walk him down. In the second, a looping right put Benn on the canvas in the opening 20 seconds. Benn beat the count. Garcia did not let him reset. Taylor stepped in with Benn trapped and barely returning fire.

“I’ve always had a right hand, I’ve just always had injuries,” Garcia said afterward. “This is kind of the first two fights I had no injuries in my right hand. I’m happy and I’m blessed. I want to thank Conor for a great build-up, great match. I respect him.”

He also credited faith and finished the in-ring interview with “Viva Mexico,” then turned toward the rest of the 147-pound division.

Rob Tebbutt, host of the Betfred Boxing Show, called it a statement: “Came out and let those blazing hands go and Conor Benn simply had no answer for it. Tough loss to take for Benn, who had little-to-no-success and was stopped in emphatic fashion.”

He added in a follow-up that Garcia’s “speed, power and ability [were] on a completely different level to Benn.”

Boxing Legends TV wrote: “Garcia just showed levels there. Too fast. Too powerful. Was landing everything. Benn couldn’t see anything coming.”

The Combat Sport Poll Guy account put it more bluntly: “RYAN GARCIA MADE CONOR BENN look like an amateur. … Speed really kills.”

A High Low Sports account argued the other way: “Wish the ref let that go just a touch longer to give Benn a chance to recover or Garcia the chance to put the stamp on it, but my lord what a thunderous BOMB of a shot from Ryan.”

User @ThaRebeliouZ wrote that Benn “was still defending himself by ducking” and called it an “early stoppage.” MMA Junkie aggregated fighter reaction under the headline “premature stoppage.”
