In overtime, the Washington Commanders found themselves poised to try a winning kick against the New York Giants. However, after messing up the last play in overtime and blocking a possible field goal try, the only thing they ended up kicking was themselves.
With only eight seconds remaining in overtime, quarterback Jayden Daniels was brought down without gaining any yards. The Commanders, lacking timeouts, were unable to halt the clock. Instead of a possible 42-yard field goal from Drew Stevens, they found themselves in a 27-27 deadlock with the New York Giants, attempting to clarify what seemed to defy explanation.
Daniels stated:
“We have to stop the clock”. “We have to know the situation. We have to relay that as an offense. It starts with everyone, top down. Ultimately, it’s on me.”
Even Magic Johnson, a minority owner of the team, shared his thoughts on X, stating that he was in “complete disbelief” regarding his Commanders’ terrible clock management in today’s overtime match. “All we needed to do was make the field goal and we would have won the match!”
McLaurin stated, mirroring his teammates and coach Dan Quinn, that the game “feels like a loss.” Following the play, Quinn remained at the 25-yard line while players left the field. Guard Sam Cosmi struck a pylon in the end zone while nearing the tunnel.
Washington has a record of 1-3-1 as they prepare for next week’s Monday night matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
