Michigan will continue with Bryce Underwood as its starting quarterback and Jason Beck as its offensive coordinator and playcaller after the bye week. Coach Kyle Whittingham stated on Monday that both Underwood and Beck would continue in their positions despite the offense’s difficulties in the initial five games.
Following Michigan’s 20-14 defeat at Minnesota on Oct. 3, where the offense produced only one touchdown, 180 yards, and made three turnovers, Whittingham remarked that some “difficult choices” might be forthcoming after an “unsatisfactory” showing.
Whittingham stated on Monday:
“Jason will call plays and Bryce is our guy, and we’ll move forward,”
The Wolverines will welcome Penn State this Saturday. Backup quarterback Tommy Carr, the grandson of ex-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, took roughly half of the reps last week with the starting offense, which was always part of the strategy during an open week, Whittingham stated.
Carr saw limited action during the final moments of Michigan’s rout over UTEP, successfully completing both of his passes. Underwood, a starter in his second year with the Wolverines and first year under Whittingham Beck, is completing only 59.3% of his passes, totaling five touchdowns and four interceptions. He has performed well as a runner, gaining 212 yards and scoring two touchdowns.
