Skip Bayless has apparently decided that free speech needs a new rulebook.
The veteran sports commentator is calling for people who use the N-word to face jail time. Yes, jail. Not a fine, not a warning, and not a stern conversation with the family. Skip wants the law to get involved.
According to Bayless, using the racial slur should be illegal.
That is quite the take from a man who has spent decades making a living by saying things that get people arguing.
Skip has never been shy about controversial opinions. In fact, controversy and Skip Bayless go together like sports debates and somebody yelling “you’re wrong!” on television.
But this time, he is taking things beyond sports.
Bayless believes there should be legal consequences for using the N-word. His argument centers on the history and harm connected to the slur. He appears to believe that society should draw a much harder line when it comes to language that has been used to demean Black people.

And Skip is not exactly known for choosing the quiet route.
If anything, the idea of putting people in jail over words immediately opens a gigantic can of worms.
The N-word carries an ugly history, and there is little debate about the damage and hatred associated with its use.
That is where Skip’s argument gets especially interesting.
Bayless has spent years discussing sports, athletes, coaches and everything in between. Now he wants lawmakers to get involved in one of the most complicated issues in American society.
Some people will applaud him, others will think he has gone too far.
And, naturally, Skip Bayless has managed to turn another conversation into something people are arguing about.
Mission accomplished, Skip.
Whether his proposal ever becomes reality is another question entirely, but one thing is certain: Skip has thrown another grenade into the debate.
And this time, there isn’t even a fourth quarter.
