Sonya Curry, mother of NBA stars Stephen and Seth Curry, has remarried, announcing the news on Instagram with photos from a private summer wedding at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Arizona.
The 60-year-old author and educator shared images of herself in a white Pnina Tornai gown with gold floral details, kissing her new husband at sunset, along with reception moments that included fireworks, a three-tiered cake, and family members. Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha, as well as Seth Curry and his wife Callie, attended the event. The identity of her new husband has not been disclosed, and comments on the post were turned off.
In her caption, Curry referenced Ecclesiastes 3 and reflected on the past seven years. She wrote that her mother died unexpectedly about a year ago “while simultaneously the most amazing man came into my life,” and that eight months later she became his wife. She described the union as an answer to prayer and said it is “never too late.” The wedding was planned in roughly nine weeks, according to her post and her wedding planner.
The marriage comes five years after Curry and former NBA player Dell Curry ended their 33-year marriage. The couple met as student-athletes at Virginia Tech in the 1980s — she played volleyball and he played basketball — and married in 1988, the year Stephen was born. They later welcomed Seth and daughter Sydel. They announced their separation in August 2021 after a trial separation that began around March 2020; the divorce was finalized later that year.
Court filings made public at the time showed the split turned contentious, with each accusing the other of infidelity. Sonya cited Dell’s “marital misconduct” and alleged he had been unfaithful with multiple women during their marriage, describing it as known to family and close friends. Dell alleged that Sonya had an extramarital relationship with Steven Johnson, a former New England Patriots tight end who had attended Virginia Tech during the same era as Dell and was described in contemporary reports as a college friend and longtime acquaintance of the family. Sonya acknowledged dating Johnson but maintained the relationship began months after their legal separation in March 2020; she denied cohabiting with him. The pair were publicly linked for a period after the separation.
Dell remarried in 2023. Sonya has previously asked that coverage of her new marriage focus on the present rather than revisit the details of the divorce.
Curry’s announcement frames the quick timeline — meeting amid personal loss, marrying eight months later, and planning a wedding in nine weeks — as a matter of faith and timing rather than haste. Her sons’ presence at the ceremony was noted in photos and coverage of the event.
