Troy Aikman, the former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys and current ESPN color commentator, allegedly had a dispute in the booth with play-by-play announcer Joe Buck just before the Monday Night Football game in Week 5 featuring the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams.
The intense confrontation arises from Aikman’s contract issue with ESPN, as the soon-to-be-free-agent commentator just witnessed his broadcast partner secure a six-year, $108 million contract while the former three-time Super Bowl champion is in the final year of his agreement.
During his appearance on DFW The Ticket on Thursday, Aikman was open about the matter, validating that an altercation had occurred while emphasizing that he anticipates becoming a free agent after the season concludes.
Troy Aikman this morning on @dfwticket about rumors of tension between him and Joe Buck.
“There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time. I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens. I’m looking forward to whatever the rest of this season does hold and the Super Bowl and all that and where my next landing spot may be.”

Aikman’s remarks complicate ESPN’s situation further, as the network has to balance the danger of losing its top analyst with the expense of retaining one of the most familiar voices in football commentary. The circumstance has turned especially uncomfortable considering the couple’s background.
Aikman and Buck have collaborated since 2022, initially at Fox and later at ESPN, establishing themselves as one of the most enduring pairs in NFL broadcasting. Even with the noted disagreement, they carried out the Rams-Bills broadcast without any noticeable disruption.
In 2022, after spending over twenty years at Fox, ESPN enticed Aikman by offering him a five-year, $90 million contract, exceeding the amount he earned as a quarterback in Dallas. Buck received slightly lower signing of $75 million during the same period.
