A.J. Hammons, starting center for the Purdue Boilermakers was suspended for three games by head coach Matt Painter on Monday for violating team rules. Painter would not elaborate on what rules were violated but it had to be pretty serious to suspend the 7-foot, 251 pound center.
Last year Hammons was one of the best freshmen in the Big 10 averaging 10.6 points and 6 rebound per game. Painter expects the center to have a breakout season after he came back in better shape.
In a statement released by the athletics department, Painter said he holds his players to certain expectations and when they fail to meet those they will be accountable. Hammons will sit out both exhibition games against Indianapolis and Wayne State as well as Purdue’s official season opener Nov. 8 against Northern Kentucky.
